Short Stories by Paige Gallacher

Was I a dream?

I’m frozen as I watch in horror as the tanks seem to come slowly but in reality they’re going faster than I can see. But every time I blink they come closer and closer. Silence is upon the whole valley. I only hear ringing in my ears. People are yelling – but I can’t hear a word they say. Am I gone? I believe that world war three is upon us.

I feel as if time has frozen as the gigantic tank is right in front of me – opening its deadly jaws , trying to consume me. I try to perambulate out of the way – but I can’t move. I feel muzzy – confuddled even! I felt as if I would plummet to the ground. Until time suddenly unfroze. “LOOK OUT!” Someone vociferously shouts out as they pushed me out of the way… Darkness was all I saw.

I saw … a strange figure. Black and white … then suddenly. I awoke – what I saw made me feel euphonic. My family surrounding me. *Phew* It was all a dream – or was it?

World War 3

It was interminable – waiting forever and ever. The determination of hundreds and thousands of lives – waiting for the time to come.

*BANG* the first gunshot was fired. There was almost total silence, but the howling wind was speaking to me – though I couldn’t quite understand what it was saying.

Suddenly – I heard yelling over the horizon. Probably as loud as bombs exploding. Which conveniently at that very second – bombs DID explode!

It was chaos – the soldiers were franticly scattered everywhere, trying to protect their family. But planes were bombing

The dirt path

This is all I see. Despair. No hope. Loss. This my friend … is my war.

This is how it started … I picked a fight with a soldier – well actually he picked a fight with me. Anyway – long story short I ended up being chased along an interminable dirt road. I kept on running until they gave up on me. I perambulated all the way home to where I discovered the horrifying. My house was burned to a crisp with only my five year old sister and three year old brother standing outside - crying vociferously. I vociferously yelled “WHERE’S MUM AND DAD!” They looked at me with sad eyes and I knew that they didn’t make it. I perambulated up to them and tried to convince them that everything is going to be okay. But when I was lying to them – and myself. I had my suspicions on who did this.

Why did this happen to me?

I don’t know why this happened to me. ME of all people – I. I lost my unicorn. I can’t recall how I lost my unicorn – but I did. You see … one day I was riding my unicorn to pick some magical berries. When suddenly … my unicorns magical rainbow trail STOPPED and we started to fall because my unicorn’s rainbow trail makes her fly. I couldn’t remember how or where I left her, but I looked EVERYWHERE! I looked in the stable – GUESS WHAT!? SHE WASN’T THERE! I got my rainbow dog to try and sniff her out. Turns out I was dreaming. We flew into the sunset.

Everything was still…

Everything was still, silent, calm and peaceful. Until – I heard the glass shatter like a ghost screaming. I hear the neighbours vociferously yelling and yet sounded like a whisper. The wind was howling – streaming past my ears. Suddenly … *CRASH* the walls started to crumble right before my eyes.

You know the expression “Life was flashing before my eyes” I think I’ve just experienced that. I wanted time to freeze so I could have time to save everything and everyone. If I could have one superpower it would be teleportation. So I could teleport the whole neighbourhood far away. From here at least.

Then suddenly everything went noir (Black in French) I couldn’t see anything. Then I felt muzzy and I could feel the wind wrapping me up like a birthday present. I was terrified, I thought I’d seen everything but apparently not! I saw grey and black swirls surrounding me. I felt extremely dizzy like when a hypnotist is hypnotising you.

Once again I only saw darkness. Am I gone?

 The sky turned grey

Monday started off average. Just another day at the same school with the same people and the same routine. But now it’s WAY below average! I had to walk home because mum and dad had to work EXTRA hours! I was NOT in the mood to walk home!

The sky turned grey as I was halfway home. *CRASH* the sky growled at me with its sharp teeth. Then the lightning flashed like a lighthouse.

The rain dripping down on my head running down my back and into my rain boots. I was halfway home when suddenly. Lightning flashed right in front of me. Flames started to spread. I was freaking out so I sprinted all the way home. “MUM, DAD” I vociferously yelled! “ THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULDN’T LET ME WALK HOME!” Then from that day on mum and dad NEVER let me walk home again.
